Inspiring adventure, mess and creativity with Alastair Humphreys’ The Doorstep Mile & A Notebook for Every Day Adventure
Book Design
Alastair Humphreys has lived, by most people’s standards, a very adventurous life, doing the most incredible things. In his book ‘The Doorstep Mile’ he starts to pick apart what an adventurous life is. He believes that it doesn't have to look like rowing across an ocean or cycling around the world (but it obviously can) but that adventure can be found everyday.
We worked with Alastair to bring this narrative to life. With the cover designed by James Shannon, we were tasked with typesetting the interior, plus designing some infographics and activities for within the pages. To really add in Al’s personality and tips, we also added in hand written prompts, suggestions and notes throughout the pages. These not only added in another layer of narrative, but their ‘messy’ handwritten appearance started to invite you to make this book your own - to write in it, use it and start mapping out your own adventures.
This then planted the seed for the “Notebook for Everyday Adventures’. We created the cover, typesetting and layout. The notebook was created to sit alongside 'The Doorstep Mile’ as a tool and prompt, but also with enough information and context to also stand alone as an adventure journal. Again, the design and layout invites you to write, sketch, spill on, rip out, use as kindling - whatever will best serve you and your adventures.
Alastair’s ethos sits so closely with our own, that creating these books was a real joy. Offering physical support and inspiration to encourage people to push themselves, get outdoors, try new things and to make the most of life’s opportunities, is a real pleasure.
