Ramble Guides started life as a blog, youtube and social media platform created by Athena Mellor. After years of adventure and travel, she rediscovered the wild beauty of the UK landscape and wanted to share it with others. She started to document walking routes in the Peak district with the dream of creating a guidebook.
The book is a celebration of one of the most beautiful places in England–paths to tread, cafes to shelter in, pubs to nestle down, and places to stay. It’s a love letter from the author to the landscape.
The Off Grid love of nature and hiking brought Athena to our inbox. After having an initial meeting pottering in the Peak District together, we were all fired up to bring the book to life.
Our creative approach had to capture Athena’s passion for The Peaks. We created bespoke hand-drawn maps of the routes, with illustrated points of interest and landmarks. We designed icons as waymarkers throughout and used beautiful typography to tie the book together.
We worked closely with the Wales based printers Gomer to find the right paper stocks, colours and finishes–ensuring the book had the quality, finish and longevity that it deserved whilst considering the sustainability impacts of the papers and ink.

The Results
“Creating a walking guidebook had always been a dream of mine, and when I decided to make that dream a reality there was no design team other than Somewhere Off Grid who I knew would be more ideal to make my vision real. Kim and Sally were a joy to work with; creating designs for my guidebook that made it unique and modern. Somewhere Off Grid went above and beyond to ensure the book met the highest standards before going to print, and instilled confidence with their professionalism and talent during a nerve-wracking process as an independent publisher. I will continue to work with Somewhere Off Grid again and again whenever I need design work, and would 100% recommend them to others.”
